Day 1Home City - Portland, OR
Begin with a morning flight to Portland, Oregon. After a casual lunch, the afternoon is spent on a guided tour of the city. This beautiful city of parks, rivers and bridges will win your heart. The evening is at your leisure.
Day 2
Astoria, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, dates from the winter of 1805-06 when the first residents (Lewis & Clark’s party) camped a bit south of the present city at Fort Clatsop. Enjoy lunch along the waterfront, then partake in a visit to the Columbia River Maritime Museum where you’ll find the history of the Pacific Northwest in focus.
Day 3
The story of Lewis & Clark is one for the ages. How they led a band of adventurers literally across the continent, encountering hardship that would have discouraged any common man, yet continued on to their destination is legendary. Today, at Fort Clatsop, part of Lewis & Clark National Historical Park, you will learn more about the members of the party and their leaders, along with the only woman in the group, Sacajawea. Enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific, as we leave Astoria and weave our way through Seaside to Tillamook. Pause for a casual lunch at the Blue Heron Cheese Factory (it’s also a wonderful place to shop). The Cape Meares Lighthouse is easily accessible and is a great photo opportunity. Lincoln City is known as the Kite Capital of the World and the shops of Depot Bay will beckon you to stop and browse. Arrive at your oceanfront accommodations in Newport at day’s end.
Day 4
Each morning your hotel offers a lovely breakfast. Every room has its own private balcony with a full-on view of the Pacific Ocean. The beach is accessible by a nearby walkway. A morning tour will show you the city and two more famous lighthouses, Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head. Old Town Newport offers many restaurants and shops in an authentic, working seaport setting. We’ve allowed time to explore. Speaking of exploring, join Marine Discovery Tours for a cruise this afternoon that will educate you about the creatures of the sea.
Day 5
Ready for more “mild” adventure? An hour south, in Florence, take a ride in a giant dune buggy. Lunch is at Mo’s, a legend up and down the Oregon Coast. Back in Newport, explore the Oregon Aquarium.
Day 6
Leave our coastal retreat today and head back inland. McMinnville is the location of the Evergreen Aviation Museum, home to Howard Hughes’ legendary Spruce Goose and 80 other aircraft. We have a special surprise for lunch today, a historical spot with a twist. Our final night is in Vancouver, Washington, just across the river from Portland. A short guided tour of the grounds at Fort Vancouver precedes a living history lesson with dinner. Your unique accommodations are certain to remind you of your Pacific Northwest location.
Day 7Oregon - Home City
Before departure this afternoon, one final piece of our Oregon history lesson will be found at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City. The center sits on the actual site of the meadow where the first travelers settled. Dine at the lodge at beautiful Multnomah Falls before heading to the airport for your return flight.
