Working Ranch Vacations
Come and spend a relaxing and rejuvenating time during a 5 or 7 day ranch
stay.
On this page:
Day 1
This
is a true Alberta working ranch experience. You head back in time at historic
Lucasia Ranch. Join ranch cowboys as they herd cattle through the picturesque
Porcupine Hills of southwestern Alberta. Surround yourself with 4000 acres
of vast open country. Herds of elk and deer mingle with Texas Longhorns
and Crossbred cattle, as well as Percheron, Appaloosa and Quarter horses.
Established
in 1881 this Alberta foothills ranch stands as testament to a bygone era.
After a day in the saddle, you can spend the evening beside a crackling
campfire or relaxing on the deck. Taste the crystal clear spring water that
flows through the ranch yard into a pond that is home to colourful ducks
and geese.
The
main ranch home has two guest rooms. Or, you can experience pioneer life
and stay in the refurbished 1900s log cabin.
Day 2 to Day 6
Guests
take part in daily ranch activities, which may include riding with your
hosts to check cattle and horses, fence mending and general ranch activities,
as well as seasonal round-ups of cattle. Other ranch options include team
roping practice and learning the basics of roping the dummy. Or perhaps
you would like to challenge someone to a game of horseshoes, enjoy an evening
of fire pit camaraderie or hike the hills and watch for birds and other
wildlife.
There’s
no need to be in a hurry this morning. You will enjoy another hearty breakfast
before heading off down the trail on your return journey through the rolling
foothills scenery to Calgary.

Cowboy
appetites always get huge. You'll surely look forward to Kathy's delicious,
generous, home-cooked meals served in our spacious ranch house or veranda.
Sittin' around an evening camp-fire by the rapids, recalling the day's work
and maybe "stretchin' the truth a bit" ... what a way to end a
day!
Experience a 3 or 6 day ranch stay while you enjoy riding and an assortment
of ranch activities.
Or, take part in one of the several horsemanship clinics available to enhance
your riding and ranch skills.
Clinic choices for 2008 include the following:
Horsemanship - 3 day Clinic
Improve your human-horse relationship by implementing correct, consistent
communication. Our horsemanship clinics teach non-intrusive techniques that
can be incorporated into any equine discipline with emphasis on the ranch
horse. Problem solving techniques will be addressed at this clinic.
Ranch Horse/Cattle Handling - 3 day Clinic
Learn numerous heading and healing roping techniques. We'll see how different
roping techniques or loops are beneficial in different situations. Try techniques
real ranch cowboys use to catch and doctor cattle in a low stress and humane
way. Proper handling of cattle on the open range or in the feedlot is an
art. Experience the western pride of good horsemanship and low stress cattle
handling techniques.
Pack Horse/Trail Riding - 3 day Clinic
The focus of this clinic is horsemanship specializing in the pack horse
and trail horse. Learn about different components of the pack saddle and
how they are used. The single and double diamond hitches, trail horse do's
and don'ts are taught. The practicum portion of the clinic sees day three
on a trail ride and days 4 and 5 on an overnight pack trip.
Cowboy 101 (Boot Camp) - 6 day Clinic
We invite you to discover a burning desire to share a life-long passion
for horses, horsemanship and learning. Immerse yourself in the challenge
of horse/human communication. A quarter century of professional teaching
and Equine Canada National Coaching training set the background for your
six days of western rider and cattle handling preparation.
This program is ideal for individuals seeking employment as a ranch or
guest ranch cowboy; or the "city slicker" who always wanted to
try cowboyin'. The program combines the following: horsemanship skills and
the ranch horse; cattle handling; ranch roping basics and horse packing.
Cowboy 101 is designed to give a quality introduction of the cowboy skills
required to carry on the day to day tasks many of today's ranches require.
Certificates are awarded on the final day for graduates of Cowboy 101.
Feel the cowboy spirit emerge as you slip into a lifestyle surrounded by
horses, cattle and Western Canadian hospitality in the peaceful Meadowlark
river valley.
