Day 1: Christchurch - Hokitika (3 hours)
Rural serenity and friendly towns lead you across the Canterbury Plains. The road then winds up into the skiing areas of Porter Heights and Craigieburn
before following the Waimakariri and Bealey Rivers to Arthur's Pass.
The route known as Arthur's Pass was first used by Maori tribes crossing to the west coast to find pounamu (jade). Today it's a sophisticated mountain
pass, memorable for its scenery as well as its breathtaking civil engineering. The settlement of Arthur's Pass is a base for climbing, hiking,
hunting and skiing adventures in the adjacent national park. There's a good choice of short walks.
Once you're through the pass, the misty mountains gradually give way to classic west coast river and forest scenery.
Day 2: Hokitika - Franz Josef (2 hours)
Visit the small town of Hokitika, the heritage and cultural centre of the West Coast, for a greenstone (jade) jewellery demonstration by a local carver.
Then visit the West Coast's newest attraction, the Treetop Walkway through the canopy of this lush rainforest. Now you're off to the gold-mining
town of Ross before arriving at Franz Josef, where you'll take a guided tour to the viewing area at the mighty Franz Josef Glacier with a local
expert glacier guide.
Day 3: Franz Josef - Wanaka (3.5 hours)
Enjoy waterfalls and river scenery as you leave the coast and climb up the Haast river valley to Haast Pass. The road snakes through the Aspiring National
Park, and the vegetation becomes more sparse as you travel inland. The wilderness town of Makarora is a chance to refuel and refresh. Watch for
the famous -bra fence' - it's become a local legend. Lakes Wanaka and Hawea make the last part of your trip beautifully scenic.
